Market Overview

Global markets traded with heightened volatility on Wednesday as investors reacted to weak US employment data, shifting central bank expectations, and renewed geopolitical developments. The US dollar staged a brief rebound during the European session but failed to sustain momentum, reflecting persistent uncertainty around the Federal Reserve’s policy outlook. Meanwhile, gold prices continued to firm near record territory, while oil markets saw a sharp rebound following supply-risk headlines linked to Venezuela.

The US Dollar Index climbed above 98.60 early in the session before paring gains to close 0.18% higher at 98.39. Treasury yields edged lower, with the benchmark 10-year yield settling near 4.163% and the 2-year yield at 3.493%, underscoring expectations that US monetary policy will remain accommodative into 2026.

Commodities in Focus

Gold Approaches Historic Highs on Fed Cut Expectations

Gold prices extended their rally, supported by a softer US labour market, renewed expectations of Federal Reserve rate cuts, and escalating geopolitical tensions. Spot gold surged to an intraday high of $4,348.70 per ounce before consolidating around $4,330–$4,340, marking its strongest levels since October.

US unemployment climbed to 4.6%, the highest reading since 2021, reinforcing concerns that economic momentum is cooling. Comments from Fed officials suggesting rates remain well above neutral further bolstered expectations for easing in 2026, keeping real yields capped and supporting bullion demand.

Silver prices surged through the $66 level to a fresh record high at $66.88 per ounce, while platinum climbed to its highest level in more than 17 years, reflecting broad-based strength across precious metals.

Oil Rebounds Sharply as Venezuela Supply Risks Resurface

Oil prices rebounded strongly from multi-year lows after US President Donald Trump ordered a blockade on sanctioned Venezuelan oil tankers, reintroducing a geopolitical risk premium into energy markets. WTI crude jumped more than 3% to close near $56.70 per barrel, while Brent crude reclaimed the $60 handle, settling around $60.79.

Despite the rebound, the broader outlook for oil remains fragile. Markets continue to price a sizeable global surplus into 2026, with weak demand indicators and rising inventories limiting the scope for sustained upside unless supply disruptions materially reduce exports.

Foreign Exchange Market Developments

US Dollar Stabilises but Lacks Conviction

The US dollar found temporary support from weakness in sterling and the Japanese yen, but overall momentum remains fragile. Conflicting signals from Federal Reserve officials reinforced a cautious, data-dependent policy stance, limiting downside but failing to spark a sustained recovery.

With markets assigning only a modest probability to a January rate cut, upcoming US CPI and jobless claims data will be critical in shaping near-term dollar direction.

Yen Volatile Ahead of Bank of Japan Decision

The Japanese yen traded erratically despite strong domestic data, including better-than-expected trade figures, exports, and machinery orders. Markets remain focused on the Bank of Japan’s upcoming policy decision, with expectations growing for a 25-basis-point rate hike to 0.75%.

While domestic fundamentals support further yen strength over the medium term, fiscal concerns and pre-meeting positioning limited gains in the near term.

Sterling Slides as Inflation Strengthens BoE Cut Bets

Sterling weakened after UK inflation cooled more than expected, reinforcing expectations that the Bank of England will cut rates by 25 basis points to 3.75%. Softer headline and core CPI readings shifted market focus toward growth and labour market risks, weighing on the pound across major pairs.

Technical Market Snapshot

USD/JPY remained in a broader bullish structure but showed signs of near-term consolidation below the 156.80 resistance zone as momentum softened. GBP/USD previously regained bullish momentum but reversed lower following UK CPI data, highlighting sensitivity to central bank expectations. USOIL remains structurally bearish despite the sharp rebound, with price still trading below key long-term averages.

Market Outlook

Looking ahead, markets are bracing for a dense slate of high-impact events, including the Bank of England and ECB rate decisions, US inflation data, and US jobless claims. These releases are expected to play a decisive role in shaping expectations for monetary policy into year-end.

Gold’s medium-term outlook remains constructive as long as Fed easing expectations persist and geopolitical risks stay elevated. The US dollar is likely to remain range-bound until clearer signals emerge from inflation and labour market data, while oil markets may struggle to sustain gains amid persistent oversupply concerns.
