Dollar Strength Roars Back as Hawkish Fed Bets Pressure Gold, GBP While Oil Holds Above $100

15 May, 2026

USD rallies on strong US data and hawkish Fed outlook as gold falls below $4700 and GBP weakens. Oil holds above $100 amid supply risks. Key forex and commodity market insights.

Market Overview:

Global markets shifted into a dollar-dominant phase as stronger US economic data and persistent inflation reinforced expectations of a higher-for-longer Federal Reserve stance. The US Dollar Index climbed to fresh two-week highs, pressuring major currencies and commodities.

Gold declined sharply below the $4,700 level as rising Treasury yields reduced demand for non-yielding assets, despite ongoing geopolitical tensions. Meanwhile, crude oil remained resilient above $100, supported by supply concerns and lingering uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz.

Sterling weakened significantly, falling to a one-month low as political instability overshadowed strong UK GDP data. In contrast, the Australian dollar continued to outperform, driven by hawkish RBA expectations and strong carry trade demand.

Key Market Drivers:

  • US Dollar Strength: Supported by strong retail sales, inflation data, and rising Treasury yields
  • Gold Weakness: Higher yields and hawkish Fed outlook pressured bullion below $4,700
  • Oil Stability: Held above $100 amid supply constraints and geopolitical risks
  • GBP Pressure: Political uncertainty outweighed positive UK economic data
  • AUD Strength: Driven by rate hike expectations and carry trade inflows

Technical Outlook:

AUD/USD – Bullish Structure Intact
The pair remains in an uptrend, consolidating below 0.7265 resistance. A breakout could open the path toward 0.7580, while support stands at 0.7115.

GBP/USD – Bearish Breakdown Confirmed
Price has moved below key support at 1.3465, shifting the structure bearish. Further downside toward 1.3185 remains likely unless recovery occurs above resistance.

USOIL – Bullish Trend Holds
Crude continues to consolidate above $100 within a broader bullish structure. A break above 108.50 could extend gains toward 112.60.

Outlook:

Markets are increasingly pricing out rate cuts, with some expectations shifting toward potential future hikes if inflation remains elevated. This continues to support the US dollar while limiting upside in gold and pressuring major currencies.

At the same time, oil markets remain highly sensitive to geopolitical developments and supply disruptions, keeping volatility elevated across commodities.

With upcoming US industrial and manufacturing data in focus, traders should prepare for continued volatility as macroeconomic signals and geopolitical risks drive global market sentiment.
