Markets stay volatile as gold consolidates, oil swings on Iran headlines, and Fed officials reinforce a higher-for-longer stance ahead of key US NFP and Canadian labor data.

Oil Swings, Gold Holds, and Fed Hawks Return as Markets Brace for High-Stakes NFP Volatility

Global financial markets remained highly volatile on May 8 as traders reacted to shifting geopolitical developments, renewed Federal Reserve hawkishness, and growing uncertainty ahead of the upcoming US Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) report.

Markets continue balancing optimism surrounding potential US-Iran peace negotiations against ongoing fears tied to the Strait of Hormuz and persistent inflation risks fueled by elevated oil prices. While crude oil prices experienced aggressive reversals throughout the session, gold prices remained supported above the $4,700 region as investors maintained safe-haven positioning amid uncertainty.

At the same time, the US dollar regained momentum after several Federal Reserve officials reiterated that interest rates may remain elevated for longer than markets previously expected. Treasury yields rebounded sharply, pressuring major currency pairs including EUR/USD and GBP/USD ahead of Friday’s critical labor market data release.

Meanwhile, the Japanese yen remained relatively firm as intervention fears and expectations for additional Bank of Japan tightening continued supporting the currency despite broad market volatility.

Gold Holds Firm Despite Volatile Market Conditions

Gold prices remained highly reactive to geopolitical headlines and changing interest rate expectations throughout the session. XAU/USD initially rallied toward the $4,765 zone as optimism surrounding a possible US-Iran agreement weakened the US dollar and reduced Treasury yields.

However, gains later moderated after Federal Reserve officials reinforced concerns that inflation risks linked to energy prices could keep monetary policy restrictive for an extended period.

Despite intraday volatility, gold maintained a broader bullish structure above the key $4,700 psychological support level. Traders continue viewing bullion as an important hedge against geopolitical instability and inflation uncertainty.

From a technical perspective, gold remains trapped below the critical 4,840 resistance region. Narrowing Bollinger Bands and weakening MACD momentum suggest markets are waiting for a stronger catalyst before establishing the next directional move.

If gold successfully breaks above 4,840, bullish momentum may accelerate toward the 5,085 region. However, failure to hold above 4,380 could expose deeper downside pressure in the sessions ahead.

Oil Markets Remain Extremely Headline-Driven

Crude oil prices experienced dramatic swings as traders reacted to conflicting reports regarding US-Iran negotiations and the future stability of energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz.

Initial reports suggesting progress toward a diplomatic agreement between Washington and Tehran pressured oil sharply lower, with WTI crude briefly falling below the $90 region. Markets interpreted the developments as a potential easing of supply disruption risks across global energy markets.

However, losses later reversed after traders reassessed ongoing shipping disruptions, constrained production capacity, and the uncertainty surrounding any final agreement.

The energy market remains highly sensitive to geopolitical headlines, with supply concerns still supporting elevated volatility despite temporary peace optimism.

Technically, USOIL remains under bearish short-term pressure after breaking below the 20 EMA and Bollinger mid-band. However, the broader long-term bullish structure remains intact while prices stay above the 100 and 200 EMAs.

A sustained move below current support levels could expose the 84.00 region, while renewed geopolitical escalation may quickly push prices back toward 108.50 resistance.

US Dollar Recovers as Fed Officials Reinforce Hawkish Outlook

The US dollar rebounded throughout the session after several Federal Reserve policymakers emphasized that inflation risks remain elevated due to higher oil prices and ongoing geopolitical instability.

Fed officials including Susan Collins, Beth Hammack, and Austan Goolsbee signaled that policymakers may need to maintain restrictive monetary policy for longer if energy-driven inflation pressures persist.

As a result, Treasury yields moved higher while markets scaled back aggressive expectations for future rate cuts.

The US Dollar Index (USDX) climbed back toward the 98.20 region, pressuring major currencies including the euro and British pound.

Markets are now increasingly focused on Friday’s Non-Farm Payrolls report, which could significantly influence Federal Reserve expectations for the remainder of the year.

A stronger-than-expected labor market report could reinforce the higher-for-longer narrative and strengthen the US dollar further. Conversely, softer employment and wage growth data may revive expectations for future Fed easing.

USD/JPY Faces Pressure from BOJ Expectations and Intervention Risks

USD/JPY remained under pressure below the 157.70 resistance region as markets continued pricing in the possibility of additional Bank of Japan tightening.

Japanese authorities also maintained strong verbal warnings against speculative currency moves, increasing market caution surrounding potential intervention activity.

Technically, USD/JPY continues showing bearish momentum after falling below the 100 EMA and lower Bollinger Band. Although short-term rebounds remain possible due to oversold conditions, sellers continue dominating below key resistance levels.

If downside momentum accelerates, the pair may revisit support near 152.60 and potentially 150.40.

USD/CAD Remains Sensitive to Oil and Canadian Labor Data

USD/CAD stayed within a broader bearish structure as volatility in crude oil markets continued driving Canadian dollar sentiment.

Despite temporary stabilization above the 1.3560 support region, the pair remains capped below all major moving averages, reinforcing ongoing bearish pressure.

Markets are now heavily focused on upcoming Canadian employment data, which may significantly influence Bank of Canada expectations.

Stronger labor market data could strengthen the Canadian dollar and pressure USD/CAD lower, especially if oil prices stabilize. Meanwhile, weaker employment figures could reinforce dovish Bank of Canada expectations and support a short-term rebound in the pair.

Markets Await High-Impact NFP Release

Attention now shifts toward Friday’s major labor market releases from both the United States and Canada.

For the US economy, traders will closely monitor:

  • Non-Farm Payrolls (Forecast: 65K)
  • Average Hourly Earnings
  • Unemployment Rate

The report is expected to become the next major catalyst for Federal Reserve expectations, Treasury yields, and overall market direction.

A strong labor market report may support the US dollar while pressuring gold and risk-sensitive currencies. Meanwhile, weaker employment data could revive expectations for Fed rate cuts and potentially trigger renewed volatility across commodities, forex markets, and global indices.

With geopolitical tensions, oil price swings, and central bank expectations all converging simultaneously, markets are likely to remain highly volatile heading into the weekend.
